free and best OEL

Hello,

I am a novice in development, i want to know which is the best Embedded Linux out there, And which is 'free' too - as in no royalty.
I will then devote time to understand and work with it to use it in a commercial appliance.

I searched the internet for sometime but no straightforward information is available. (or i could not find)

Am i correct to understand that full source code of the product has to be opened up for free for everyone - IF it has parts of GPLed code?
