need help.

I'm trying to get a light version of linux build for a embedded system
purpose and i will be building some web application on it.
I would like to know

-> Which build i can pick up or how i can strip it down.
-> I saw some article that the linux build has Cherokee and other light
version of Java Servlet libraries or equivalent web application building
tools.

Appreciate any pointers on this. thanks much in advance.
